Top Ten Spring Cleaning Projects

Spring is right around the corner, which means so is the dreadful chore of spring cleaning. We have made a super easy checklist for you to follow with tips and tricks on how to effectively clean your home this Spring! We put together the top 10 spring cleaning projects from FamilyEducation.com that will make the task of Spring cleaning not so daunting.

1.       WINDOWS

Dirty windows are something none of us can avoid. Before you go at it with a bottle of Windex and a roll of paper towels, equip yourself with the right tools to make this small chore easier. Grab a lint free rag while you’re at the store and mix 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid for every 2 gallons of water. Use a nice large window squeegee with a sharp new rubber blade to get the best results!

2.       UPHOLSTERY, MATTRESSES, BEDDING, AND PILLOWS

This is one of the easiest tips that’ll make you feel extra clean. Grab your vacuum cleaner with an attachment and go over all your surfaces. Wash or dry clean all slipcovers, throws, mattress pads, comforters, blankets, and pillows. While the beds are stripped, flip the mattresses. If you want a deeper clean, you always have the option to rent a rug shampoo machine with an upholstery attachment.

3.       KITCHEN APPLIANCES

Empty your fridge and wash down all the shelves and drawers. Clean the oven and give the cooktop a good scrub down! Freshen your dishwasher by running it empty, with 1 cup of baking soda and 1½ cups white vinegar. Clean the inside of the microwave with baking soda and water; loosen tough spills by boiling a cup of water inside it. Don't forget the toaster, blender, coffeemaker, and other small appliances – follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions.

4.       COUNTER TOPS AND WALL TILES

Whether it's sealing granite, waxing marble, or oiling butcher block, there's an appropriate maintenance chore for every countertop. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for each type of counter in your house – kitchen and bathrooms. Take care of any damages: stains, nicks, burns, etc.

5.       FLOORS AND RUGS

Shake out your rugs and pull the vacuum cleaner out. If you are privileged enough to call a carpet cleaner, that’s most likely going to be the best option for getting the best results. Hardwood floors? Make them shine this summer with a fresh wax and buff!

6.       CABINETS AND DRAWERS

Cabinets and drawers are tricky because they are what conceals our mess! Do yourself a favor and clean out your cabinets once a year. Note: Do not dispose of medicine in the toilet. Alarming levels of numerous drugs are now appearing in many water supplies. Many pharmacies are now accepting expired medications for recycling. Wash down the cabinets and drawers, inside and out, and reorganize the contents.

7.       CLOSTS AND BEDROOM DRAWERS

This is something we are all familiar with. Austin may not follow the seasons exactly but there is a large enough difference between summer and winter that you might consider switching out your clothes. Clean and properly store your big winter coats in the garage or attic. De clutter your closet for the best results.

8.       CLUTTER

There are only 4 options when it comes to clutter-

-Throw away

-Give away

-Storage

-Keep

9.       DUST

Start at the top and work your way down. Invest in a nice duster that can move at all angles and get those hard to reach places. Dust down the ceiling, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and walls. Finally, dust along the baseline and then gather dust when mopping or vacuuming!

10.   DRAPERIES, CURTAINS, AND BLINDS

Spring is the right time to take down all your draperies and curtains for washing or cleaning. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions. Blinds and shades will also need cleaning, which you can do without taking them down.
