Deck vs. Patio: Which is more Popular?

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction for 2014 revealed that patios are a popular choice among homeowners all over the U.S. Fifty-six percent (56%) of new homes constructed included patios in their respective designs. Twenty-three percent (23%) of new homes, on the other hand, had decks.

Both patios and decks let homeowners enjoy the outdoors and increase the living space in a home. Patios are similar to courtyards since they can either be attached to or separate from the house. Any material may be used for patios and are often constructed at ground level, which eliminates the need for railings. Decks, on the other hand, are made of wood or composite wood material, requires railings, and are often elevated from the main home structure to let homeowners enjoy the view.

However, it is important to note that the popularity of patios also depends on geographic preferences of homeowners. Patios may be preferred by the majority in the West South Central, Mountain, and Pacific divisions, but not in the Middle Atlantic, New England, and East South Central regions.
