Celebrating Memorial Day Weekend 2020 in Austin

Memorial Day is an incredibly special time to show pride and give gratitude for those the have given the ultimate sacrifice to keep us all safe and our communities protected. With the current pandemic, Memorial Day weekend is going to look a little different this year. However, there are many ways to celebrate responsibly and keep the memories in Memorial Day.

We've rounded up 5 ideas on how to honor the brave and spend quality time with the ones you love over this holiday weekend:

  1. Keep the memory in Memorial Day by honoring the brave that have served and are no longer with us. Take the family to visit local outdoor monuments, visit the graves of loved ones and spend time sharing memories, or even enjoy their favorite things (TV shows, drinks, meals, or songs).
  2. Watch the National Memorial Day Concert on Sunday at 8 p.m. broadcasted by PBS Austin. "On the eve of Memorial Day, a star-studded lineup will grace the stage for one of PBS’ highest-rated programs. This multi-award-winning television event honors the military service and sacrifice of all our men and women in uniform, their families and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country."  You will catch performances by General Colin L. Powel, Trace Adkins, CeCe Winans, and more!
  3. Organize your own Memorial Day Dar Parade or have the kids pull together a Memorial Day Bicycle parade! Many of the parades are cancelled this year, so a fun idea is to organize your own to celebrate on monday. Enroll your neighbors in a fun car parade or hook the kids in your community up with decorated bicycles and fun music for all of the kids to ride thorugh the neighborhood with the grown-ups cheer them on with patriotic gear and signs!
  4. Create your own backyard drive-in style theater! Hang up a sheet, grab your projector, and line the yard with blankets and pillows. Your family will love this cozy theater night.
  5. Get outdoors! If this weekend is a time for you to relax and remember, take time to enjoy nature and your loved ones with any of your favorite outdoor activities.
