Austin Economy Named on Most International ListThe Austin economy was named on a Most International List in the country by a recent study released by Brookings Institution. The study evaluated economies of other cities in the nation based on statistics from 2010. 

The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area ranked ninth in percentage of international trade share, according to the report. Austin came in at 22.3 percent. Houston was the only other Texas city to make the list and ranked 5th in the country at 23.9 percent.

New Report Estimates Austin to Have Top Growing Metro Economy for 2013-2014A new report estimates that Austin will have the top growing metro economy from 2013 to 2014. This report was created for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and was compiled by international forecasting and information company IHS Global Insights. 

This new report projects that the Austin-Round Rock- San Marcos area will increase the region's gross metropolitan product by 5.9 percent in the next year. The GMP equals the total value of services and goods in a metro area. It's projected that the Austin area's value will grow from $103.2 billion to $109.3 billion.

Austin Ranked High for Top Commercial Real Estate MarketsAustin has been ranked as one of the top commercial real estate markets in the country, according to a new report from the Urban Land Institute. The UIL recently published the Emerging Trends in Real Estate review for 2014 to coincide with its annual conference that took place in Chicago this November. 

Austin ranked 7th on the list. The report gave props to the capital city for strength in areas including employment growth, housing construction and opportunities for new business. Lower taxes combined with highly-trained employees also contribute to Austin's top ranking.

Austin Named a Top Energy Efficient CityRecently Austin was named a top energy-efficient city in the U.S., according to a new study by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. The Capital City placed 6th overall on the ranking. 

The ACEEE is a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. The group conducts research and works to promote and advance energy efficiency through policies, investments, programs and technology. The ACEEE studied over 34 cities in the nation to compile their list, known as the City Energy-Efficiency Scorecard. Factors taken into consideration for the rankings include community initiatives, transportation, buildings, local government operations and energy water utilities public benefits programs.

Austin Ranked Top Economy in CountryOnce again, Austin ranked the top economy in the country, according to The Business Journals' On Numbers. Austin seized the No. 1 spot on the list for many factors, including its steady job-creating power. 

Austin has held the top spot on the list for 8 out of 10 months during the current year. Only Oklahoma City and Provo, Utah briefly stole the crown from the Texas capital in 2013. The ranking consists of 102 major metropolitan areas that span the country.

Austin Safety StatisticsAustin has been ranked among one of the safest major cities in the country according to the FBI's Unified Crime Report. Austin jumped up to the No. 2 spot for cities with populations over 500,000. Previously Austin was ranked 3rd the previous year.

Austin Unemployment Rate Nears Perfection

Austin Unemployment RateAustin's unemployment rate dropped to 5.2 percent last month, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. This indicates a decline from 5.6 percent the previous month, and also down from the 5.9 percent rate this same time last year.

Economists estimate that a healthy unemployment rate ranges from 4 to 6 percent. If the rate drops below 4 percent, economists warn that this can indicate inflation due to upward force on salaries. Austin to Host X-Games Starting in 2014Austin has been chosen to host a stop on Global X-Games circuit for a four year contract starting in 2014. The first round of Austin X-Games are scheduled for May 15-18, 2014 at the new race track, Circuit of the Americas, located approximately 20 minutes from downtown.

Austin won the bid, beating out finalists including Chicago, Detroit and Charlotte, North Carolina. Austin, known as the Live Music Capital of the World, will replace long time host Los Angeles that has held the summer spotlight for the past 11 years.

UT Named One Of Top UniversitiesThe University of Texas has been ranked high on multiple lists for top colleges in the country, as well as in the world. UT is also recognized as a best value for higher education. 

The University of Texas ranked number 26th out of the top 100 schools in the world according to the 2013 report from The Center for World University Rankings. For in the U.S., the Longhorns placed 7th for public universities. 

According to the 2014 Fiske Guide to Colleges, UT was also listed as one of the "Best Buys in Higher Education," though no specific rankings were released in that report. This list included 21 public universities and 20 private colleges across the country, as well as Canada and the United Kingdom.

Austin Grows to 11th Largest City in the NationAccording to new Census data, Austin has now grown to the 11th largest city in the nation. This is a surprising jump from the 13th spot that Austin held last year.  Austin has now passed both Jacksonville, Florida and Indianapolis, Indiana for population size.


The data included in this report account for populations within the city limits. Information collected from the U.S. Census Bureau included data from births, deaths, and migration to calculate population numbers.

Record Month of May fr Homes Sales in AustinMay 2013 marked the most volume of homes sold in the greater Austin area, according to the Austin Board of Realtors. The real estate market has been strong in the area for some time, and continues on an upward rise. 

2,991 single family homes sold in this May, which is a 29% increase from the year before. During May, homes sold in an average of 44 days, which is 19 days quicker than in May 2012. Home prices are also up 8 percent from the same month last year, with the medium Austin-area home price of $231,500 this May.

Austin Ranks High in Clean Technology LeadershipAustin ranked 11th in the country for clean technology leadership according to the 2013 Clean Technology Leadership Index reported by Clean Edge, an advisory and research board that was founded in 2000 specializing in the clean technology sector. 

The index ranks cities across the country based on several factors, including green energy sources, hybrid and electric vehicles, green building deployment, smart meter installations, and clean economy jobs to name a few.
