Austin Ranked One of Safest Major Cities in the Country
Austin has been ranked among one of the safest major cities in the country according to the FBI's Unified Crime Report. Austin jumped up to the No. 2 spot for cities with populations over 500,000. Previously Austin was ranked 3rd the previous year.
The FBI study showed that as a whole, violent crimes and rape were decreasing, while murder, aggravated assault and property crime are increasing. Murders in Austin were reported to have a slight rise, from 27 in 2011 to 33 this past year.
Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo is proud of Austin's ranking even with the slight increase in statistics from 2011. Acevedo credits a good relationship between Austin's citizens and police force, as well as the hard work of Austin's law enforcement officers to the increase in ranking this past year.
