As early as the 1850s, Dietrich Bohls moved from Austin to his new home at the confluence of Barton Creek and Little Barton Creek. The population of Austin had reached 900 people, and Mr. Bohls was looking for a place to raise his family away from the confines of the city and its influence. At the time, the land west of Austin still had Indians roaming over it; therefore, other settlers in the area were scarce. The Bohls family was one of the first families to settle on the land that would become the City of Bee Cave. The area derived its name from the colonies of Mexican honeybees that lived in the banks of Barton Creek and Little Barton Creek that encompassed a large area of Western Travis County. In 1987, the City of Bee Cave administration had its humble, but proud, beginning in a nondescript portable building. The City of Bee Cave encompassed a two-square-mile area with 8,800 acres of extraterritorial jurisdiction. The 1990 population was approximately 214 people, and the establishment of the City of Bee Cave was official.
Today, the City of Bee Cave has an estimated population of 3,925 (2010 estimate) and 2,445.52 incorporated acres (2004 estimate). The city’s total appraised value has grown approximately 400% in the past seven years. Bee Cave officials manage this growth by providing the services and amenities the citizens seek. The New City Hall’s innovative two-story design features 10,000 square feet of municipal offices, 5,000 sq ft of community space, a 5,000 sq ft Public Library, and approximately 9,500 sq ft of expansion space. The City Council has also adopted a Parks and Open Space Master plan and will begin construction in 2008 for a 50-acre Central Park located in the heart of the city.
Bee Cave TX Education
Bee Cave is part of the Exemplary rated Lake Travis Independent School District. The mission of the Lake Travis ISD is to educate all students by teaching a comprehensive curriculum which emphasizes scholastic excellence. The District will serve as a model of educational excellence by making use of the combined skills of students, teachers, support staff, involved parents and citizens through the efficient use of resources. Our graduates will have lifelong problem-solving skills. They will understand that responsibilities accompany the privileges of citizenship and will have the foundation to be successful in their chosen endeavors.
The three elementary schools serving Bee Cave are Bee Cave Elementary, Lake Point Elementary, and Lake Travis Elementary. Both Lake Travis Middle School and Lake Travis High School are in unincorporated areas and serve Bee Cave.
Bee Cave TX Recreation
Bee Cave is home to the recently developed Hill Country Galleria, which has helped add too much of the growth in this area. The Galleria offers 125 acres of exciting and eclectic upscale shopping, dining and entertainment options, as well as residential and office spaces.
Bee Cave also hosts the famous and recently relocated music venue, The Backyard, where legendary artists including Willy Nelson, David Bowie, The Allman Brothers, and Bob Dylan have all graced the stage. The Backyard is a unique, open-air venue in a secluded natural setting. This venue also prides itself on its green initiative and practices which help give back and protect its beautiful environment.
Sports enthusiasts have plenty of activities with the nearby lake or Falconhead Golf Club. Beautiful Lake Travis hosts a variety of recreational sporting activities from boating, fishing or just fun in the sun. Falconhead Golf Club is a gorgeous 18-hole course that was designed by PGA Tour architects.
Bee Cave TX Quality of Life
Bee Cave has a small town attitude with big city conveniences. It’s the best of both worlds. Though the area has experienced booming growth in the past decade, the population is estimated around 4,000. Even with its small-town charm away from Austin city limits, the residents are close to fine dining, retail stores and the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country.
