Quaint houses with a lot of charm area what you find in the Travis Heights neighborhood. Although this neighborhood is rather aged, almost anyone can feel very much at home. The houses are well taken care of and many have been renovated to accommodate modern day needs. This established neighborhood is one of Austin's first dating back to the early 1890's when it was officially annexed by the city of Austin. Travis Heights is known around Austin as having an eccentric and unconventional vibe, it's politics, and it's high priced homes. A few of the older homes have carriage houses and detached garages that have been turned into sought after apartments. The make-up of the community is very mixed and diverse. Travis Heights residents have been engaged in the battle over development within its boundaries and on the edges, along its northern boundary at Riverside Drive and its western at South Congress Avenue. This is not a cookie-cutter neighborhood by any means. The homes are very unlike each other and most have large backyards Most of the neighborhood consists of two-bedroom one bath homes but there are a few mansions in the area as well. This area is also great for those that love the outdoors Big Stacy and Little Stacy Park have a great hike and bike trail that residents can be seen jogging at in the early morning or walking their dogs in the afternoon. There is also Stacy Pool that stays open year round and a jungle gym for kids to play on. The residents here are very active and are not hesitant to take initiative. The residents once even organized a summer concert to help raise money for Stacy Pool. Tennis courts are also available at the park or residents can also relax at some of the natural areas in the 23 acre greenbelt along Blunn Creek. Travis Heights also has Norwood Estate Park at Riverside and IH35 which is also a popular place for residents to gather after work or on weekends.
Families are not the only make up of Travis Heights. People with diverse backgrounds and interesting occupations such as artists, film makers, teachers, and business professionals reside here as well. Many professionals that work downtown enjoy this quiet neighborhood that is just minutes from their office. Travis Heights gets its name from the lay of the land. The streets roll up and down a series od small rises that give some residents great views of downtown while others look out on quiet woodland hollows.
